Is IPTV Legal in Canada? What Viewers Should Know

This guide is general information, not legal advice. If you need certainty about your own situation, speak to a Canadian lawyer.

The technology is not the issue

IPTV simply means television delivered over the internet. Many large, licensed Canadian and international broadcasters and streaming companies use it. So the real question is never "is IPTV legal?" but "is this particular service, and the content it carries, properly licensed?"

What decides whether a service is lawful

Licensing. In Canada, copyright is governed by the Copyright Act, and broadcasting is regulated by the CRTC. Distributing or streaming content without the rights holder's permission can infringe copyright.
The source of the content. A provider that has agreements with rights holders is in a different position from one that re-streams channels without permission.
How the service is run. Canadian courts have ordered internet providers to block some unauthorized streaming services, so enforcement is real.

Questions to ask any IPTV provider

Can you explain where your content comes from and how it is licensed?
Do you publish terms, a privacy policy, a refund policy and a copyright (DMCA) contact?
Is there a business contact I can reach and a trial before I pay?
Are prices, plans and cancellation rules stated clearly?

Where Prime IPTV stands

Prime IPTV publishes its terms, privacy policy, refund policy and DMCA notice, and a disclaimer that explains viewers are responsible for making sure their use of the service complies with the laws that apply to them. We do not give legal advice, and we encourage you to check the rules that apply to you.

Quick answers

Can I get in trouble for watching?

Rules differ by situation and change over time. Ask a lawyer if you are unsure.

Is a free trial a safe way to look?

A trial lets you test quality and channels without paying, but it does not change the licensing question above.
